Brush guide: The best brush for your hair

Finding a new hairbrush or the ideal comb is often not as easy as you might imagine. Paddle brush, round brush or a comb? In our brush guide, we show you which brush is best for you and your hair.

Which brush will add shine to your hair and which comb will create the perfect parting? And how do you add volume to your hair? Choosing the right tools is very important and should be done carefully, as the wrong brush or a bad comb will lead to split ends and dry hair.

Tools made from high-quality materials, on the other hand, make the hair really shine and conjure up a voluminous and glamorous hairstyle. They also massage the scalp and can even make hair grow faster!

It all depends on the bristles

Bristles are mainly made from three different materials - plastic (e.g. nylon), natural bristles or wire. Natural bristles are considered particularly gentle, massage the scalp and add shine. Metal bristles and ceramic knobs are a real all-rounder for any hair.

Look for high-quality workmanship. Synthetic bristles can be produced in any shape and are therefore particularly flexible. A soft material is particularly suitable.

Which hairbrush is the best?

Detangling brushes - Detangler Brush

Detangler brushes - such as the Tangle Teezer - look like little plastic hedgehogs. They are made from a particularly flexible synthetic material and - as the name suggests - are perfect for detangling hair.

Their compact size makes them ideal for the handbag, so hair can be detangled quickly and easily when travelling. They are also ideal for detangling extensions.

For long, straight hair - Paddle Brush

The paddle brush is relatively large and is suitable for long and straight hair. It grabs a lot of hair at once and is therefore very efficient even with thick hair. The brush can also be used for blow-drying. Long hair with slight waves can be straightened quickly and easily with the paddle brush.

For short, straight hair - skeleton brushes

Thanks to its compact size, the skeleton brush is ideal for short, fine hair and curls. Fringes also love the skeleton brush, whether for brushing or blow-drying, and as it allows air to pass through, the skeleton brush is particularly gentle on fringes or fine, shorter hair. The skeleton brush is also ideal for men.

For every hair - all-rounder brushes

Everyone knows them and many of us have one - the oval all-rounder brush with different bristles. It's worth investing a little money in a high-quality brush that combines natural bristles with high-quality plastic knobs. This ensures that the hair is brushed particularly gently during daily hair care.

The scalp is also pleasantly massaged with this brush, which contributes to the health of the scalp. In turn, a healthy scalp is essential for healthy and fast-growing hair.

Volume in short hair - small round brushes

Small round brushes disappeared from the scene for a long time and were seen as old-fashioned. But there is nothing better than a small round brush to give fine hair more volume at the roots.

Apply some volumising foam to the roots and blow-dry the hair 80% dry. Then divide it into small sections at the top of the head and place the brush at the roots.

Now point the hairdryer at the brush and hold the tension in the hair. After approx. 10 seconds, press the cold button and blow-dry the hair cold for a few more seconds. The longest-lasting root volume ever is ready.

Volume in long hair - large round brushes

Large round brushes are wonderful for voluminous, long hair à la Victoria's Secret. They give incredible volume and soft, big waves. Here too, there are different types of bristles. Natural bristles give more shine, but are a little more difficult to use than brushes with synthetic bristles.

Apply a volumising blow-dry lotion to the hair and dry it to 80%. Now section off part by part and wrap the hair around the brush from bottom to top. Blow-dry it warm until it is dry and then use the blow-dryer's cold programme for a few seconds.

Brush for extensions

Do you wear extensions? Then you definitely need a brush with flexible bristles in different lengths. This allows the brush to glide effortlessly through the bonds. Incidentally, extensions should be brushed at least twice a day to prevent knots.

Combs as ideal styling tools

There are also big differences in combs and many different shapes and materials. So which comb is the perfect complement for a successful hairstyle? And what do you need to look out for to avoid damaging your hair?

For wet hair - coarse comb

The wide-toothed comb is THE ideal styling tool for wet hair. The coarse teeth glide perfectly through wet or towel-dried hair and detangle it easily, quickly and without tearing.

For extreme volume - toupee comb

Teasing combs or teasing brushes conjure up dramatic volume in the hair, as they can be used to create really powerful teasing at the roots. They are particularly suitable for updos.

Cleaning the hairbrushes

The correct and regular cleaning of brushes is often forgotten. Every fortnight, all hair should first be removed with a coarse-toothed comb and then the brush should be lathered with a little mild shampoo and lukewarm water. Rinse well and leave to dry. Then lay the brushes on a cloth with the bristles facing downwards to allow them to dry. This prevents water from running into the brush bed.
