Camouflage make-up can be used to cover all discolourations of the skin. We have tested the products for you. Find out all about the high-coverage make-up products and how to use them correctly.

Blemished skin, dark circles under the eyes, acne or other skin discolourations are difficult to conceal with conventional make-up products. Camouflage make-up is the solution in this case. Camouflage products contain more pigments and therefore provide greater coverage. The effect can be further enhanced with colour correcting - which means balancing with the opposite colour.

What is camouflage make-up?

Camouflage make-up is a foundation, concealer or other base product that is more pigmented than conventional make-up. It even covers scars, tattoos and skin discolouration reliably and long-lastingly.

Camouflage foundation

One of the most popular camouflage products is probably the foundation itself. The highly opaque foundation can withstand pretty much anything and is therefore particularly suitable as stage make-up.

Camouflage concealer

The concealer is known for concealing blemishes, dark shadows and small imperfections. The camouflage version of concealer is even more opaque and is also ideal for concealing tattoos, for example. A camouflage concealer is also perfect for anyone who only wants to conceal small areas. A camouflage foundation is often not necessary and the concealer alone is completely sufficient.

Camouflage palettes

The more advanced make-up artists among you will certainly be familiar with colour correcting. This type of camouflage make-up is particularly popular thanks to YouTube and Instagram.

Admittedly, it's not a make-up technique that you need in everyday life. However, if you are struggling with particular discolouration that even concealer and foundation can no longer help with, then colour correcting is the right choice for you.

What are the different colours for?

As the name suggests, colour correcting is based on simple colour theory. The opposite colour in the colour wheel is used to cover unwanted discolouration. As the first step in the make-up routine, the colours are applied under the concealer to neutralise discolouration and create a uniform complexion.

  • Green: At first glance, the rather unnatural-looking mint green is the secret weapon against stubborn redness. Use it to cover red spots or rosacea.
  • Salmon/pink: Pink tones for lighter skin or reddish tones for darker skin types are ideal for concealing bluish and purplish shadows under the eyes.
  • Purple: As a contrasting colour to yellow, the purple correction ensures a refreshed complexion without a sallow undertone.

How to apply camouflage make-up correctly

Camouflage make-up is extremely opaque and must therefore be applied very sparingly. It should also be blended very well so that there are no edges or smudges. A beauty blender is ideal for applying it. The make-up can also be applied very well with a compact brush.

The aim with camouflage make-up is to achieve the best possible coverage, but the result should still look natural and not mask-like. Depending on the consistency and packaging, either apply the camouflage product to the back of your hand or take it directly from the container.

Be careful not to apply too many layers of the high-coverage make-up. Not only will it look like a mask, but you also run the risk of achieving a cakey look - make-up that almost appears to have been spread over the face.

If you are not yet familiar with camouflage make-up, it is not advisable to apply colour correcting, concealer and foundation straight away. One camouflage product is usually enough to achieve the desired effect - at least for everyday use.

What is the correct order of the products?

The same rules apply here as with conventional make-up. If you use colour correcting, first neutralise the skin with the colours, then use concealer and, if necessary, foundation.

Make sure to blend the colours of the colour correcting well and cover them with an opaque concealer.

How does camouflage make-up last best?

Many camouflage products are already waterproof or more long-lasting than their less opaque siblings. Nevertheless, powder or setting spray are good ways of ensuring that the make-up really stays in place.

Lightly powder the areas that grease quickly or where make-up tends to build up. A light hand is also required here. Too much powder on an already opaque foundation will once again look unattractive. Remember that in this case the powder is no longer intended to cover anything, but merely to set the make-up.

A fixing spray is also ideal for making the make-up last even longer. Camouflage make-up often causes the skin to lose its glowy look. A fixing spray is perfect for restoring a youthful glow to the skin.

The right preparation and follow-up

As with all make-up, preparation is half the battle with camouflage. Any foundation or powder will settle on dry skin and appear cracked. So make sure you use a good facial moisturiser so that a flawless complexion is not just the order of the day with camouflage make-up. A good moisturiser for the night and a protective cream with SPF for the day are absolute must-haves!

Camouflage make-up in the test - how well does it really cover

We tried out the effect of camouflage for you and tested the Double Wear - Maximum Cover Camouflage Make-up and the Glo Skin Beauty Camouflage.

Double Wear - Maximum Cover Camouflage Make-up

The Maximum Cover Foundation is very easy to apply and blend. The consistency feels pleasant and not at all mask-like. A glance in the mirror shows: My dark circles have completely disappeared and the redness has also been completely evened out. However, the heavy coverage makes me look very pale. I would therefore definitely advise you to use some bronzer and blush.

Glo Skin Beauty Camouflage

This oil-free product from glo skin beauty contains rich pigments for medium to full coverage and can be used on all skin types. It is perfect for covering blemishes, hyperpigmentation or skin-related problem areas.

Make-up with good coverage

Camouflage is not always the right product. If you simply want to conceal redness or achieve an even complexion, you can use a make-up with good coverage. The advantage of good coverage make-up over camouflage products is that it appears more natural and less mask-like despite its good coverage.

Conclusion

Goodbye dark circles, blemishes and scars - treat yourself to a camouflage product and get rid of unwanted discolouration! We can definitely recommend camouflage if you are looking for high-coverage make-up.
