Oily skin can be a bigger problem in summer than in winter. The sun makes your pores sweat more and your skin tends to look greasy. Find out how to control the oil on your skin and enjoy beautiful skin in summer.

Most of the time, oily skin is shiny all day. We explain which products are the right ones, what you need to look out for and what are the absolute no-goes.

Where is the cause?

Oily, shiny skin is the result of increased sebum production. This serves to keep the skin surface supple at all times, to supply it with moisture and to protect it from external influences. Normally, the skin only produces as much oil as it needs. However, the sebaceous glands of oily skin work more and faster than those of normal skin.

So all the oil accumulates on the surface of the skin and provides the shine. Since the pores are usually clogged by the oil, impurities and pimples develop. The skin looks dull and the pores are visible. Oily skin is a perfect breeding ground for bacteria and therefore needs all the more care.

The positive about oily skin

Hard to believe, oily skin also offers an advantage. Because it is always moisturised, it is less prone to ageing and wrinkles. Normally, it is very robust against external influences, as the sebum serves like a protective shield for the skin's surface.

What to do against oily skin?

Of course, you want to neutralise the shine on your skin as much as possible. The following tips can help you fight oily skin.

Woman washing her face with cleansing foam.

Reduce sebum production

It is important to always be gentle on the skin. Rubbing or aggressive cleansing causes the sebaceous glands to produce even more sebum. Oil production is also increased by psychological stress. You should avoid stress at all costs for beautiful skin.

Clean pores

Thorough but gentle cleansing is the most important step in skin care against oily skin. The pores need to be unclogged so that pimple-forming bacteria do not accumulate in them, leading to blemished skin. Use a gentle cleansing gel in the morning and in the evening and then pat the face dry, but do not rub it.

Gentle exfoliation

Once a week, a mild exfoliating scrub should also be used to really deep clean pores and rid the skin of excess sebum. An absolute no-go are peelings with hard and sharp exfoliating grains, these only injure the skin and cause more sebum production as the skin feels attacked.

Clarify the skin

Now a clarifying toner is needed. Dry skin should not come into contact with products that contain alcohol or zinc. For oily skin, however, a small amount of alcohol or zinc is helpful because it disinfects and clarifies the skin.

Oil free care

It is absolutely not true that oily skin does not need moisturiser. The moisturiser should be oil-free, that is, without rich oils. Water-based cream gels or gels are perfect for this.

Day care that has been specially developed for oily skin often contains active ingredients that regulate sebum and make the skin look duller.

The right primer

When applying make-up, there are also a few things that need to be taken into account, such as using a primer. Due to the oil on the skin's surface, the foundation usually slips off quickly and looks unattractive accordingly. Therefore, a pore-minimising primer helps to refine the skin's appearance and mattifies the skin even before the foundation is applied.

The foundation you use should always be oil-free and mattifying, otherwise it won't last well and will shine all day.

To enhance the effect, a mattifying powder can be used at the end, which gives it additional hold.

Extra tip: Always carry the powder with you, together with a small brush, so that you can apply powder in between.

Clarifying masks

To degrease the sebaceous glands, you can use a clay or healing clay mask twice a week. These are perfect for oily skin as they cleanse the pores and clarify the skin - resulting in less build-up and pimples.
