Stars love this trend. So do we! Balayage has been a hot topic for a while and is absolutely on trend. We tested the coloring technique for fantastic highlights and color nuances in one of our PerfectHair.ch salons.
What is Balayage?
If you want subtle accents in your hair, then the Balayage technique is perfect for you. In this coloring technique, the color is applied freehand to the hair with a brush, and the hair roots are usually left untouched. It's a kind of artistic form of hair coloring, resulting in a very natural look.
Who is Balayage suitable for?
In general, we can say that Balayage can be applied to any hair type and texture, meaning everyone can wear Balayage. This is likely one reason why this look is so popular.
For long hair, it usually looks more natural due to the fine transition compared to shorter hair. Well-trained hairstylists can create a very natural Balayage look even with short hair.
The right Balayage technique can even create volume in the hair.
How does the Balayage technique work?
We watched our hairstylist Steffi from the PerfectHair.ch salon in Zurich on Turbinenstrasse and show you how she works her magic to create beautiful Balayage.
Balayage theoretically doesn't require foils, meaning the strands are applied to the hair freehand with a brush. However, Steffi prefers to use foils even in Balayage for a clear advantage: no stains.

Step 2
Then it's time to wait because the bleach needs to set, approximately 30 minutes, depending on the hair type. Afterward, everything is washed out.

Step 4
Blow-dry and style: To showcase the color play of the technique, the hair needs to be blow-dried and then curled and styled with a straightener.
My conclusion
I'm super happy with the result! The color transition is very natural and I love it. The play with the nuances is really successful! I already had a very natural hair color, and I'm glad I could maintain that. The strands at the top now make everything look brighter and more "tidy."
Balayage vs. Ombré
What is the difference between Balayage and Ombré? Is there even one?
Colloquially, the two terms are often used interchangeably. However, there is indeed a difference. We asked our hairstylist Steffi to explain the exact difference between Balayage and Ombré.
Ombré means "shadow." In the Ombré technique, striking hair colors are combined, creating a visible gradient in the hair. It involves a dark root that gradually transitions to light tips. Usually, a dark shade is used from the root to the ears. Due to the combination of two striking hair colors, Ombré looks less natural than Balayage. If you like strong contrasts, Ombré is the right choice for you.
Balayage focuses on absolute naturalness. The color transition is smoother than with Ombré, as finer work is done, resulting in a subtle transition between different hair colors.
Advantages of Balayage
- No constant retouching: If you use your natural hair color as the base, you don't have to recolor your hair every month. Unlike highlights from the root, there's no noticeable regrowth. This saves time and money.
- Gentler coloring: Your natural hair color can serve as the base, while the lower hair section gets a new color. This means less hair is colored, reducing damage and providing gentler treatment.
- Natural look: With Balayage, you get a very natural result despite coloring your hair. The look is reminiscent of surfers who have a beautiful color gradient from sun exposure.
Balayage Care
Even though your hair is less stressed with the Balayage technique compared to traditional highlighting, it's essential to give your hair plenty of care after bleaching. To prevent your hair from developing a yellow tint, it's recommended to use a violet shampoo or conditioner. The blue-violet products ensure that your hair maintains a cool blonde tone, avoiding any yellowing.
