Toning or coloring hair? These are the differences

Toning or coloring hair: The differences between the two methods couldn't be greater. We'll show you whether you should tone or dye your hair and what you should look out for.

First, you need to ask yourself the following question: Should grey hair be covered, do you want a bold new color, or just a color refresh?

Depending on the answer to this question, you can either dye, tint or even bleach.

Toning and intensive toning

Regular toner

It is not possible to lighten the hair by toning it. Toning is ideal for refreshing existing hair color. Compared to dyeing, toning has the advantage that it washes out completely within six to eight washes, so there is no visible build-up.

The color is only applied to the outside of the hair and does not penetrate the hair structure, so the hair is treated gently and does not break. This is why toning cannot significantly change or lighten the hair color. Gray hair is also not covered with a tint.

Intensive toning

Intensive toning differs from conventional toning in that it contains certain chemical substances. These chemical components give the intensive tint a longer shelf life - it lasts for around six to eight weeks and gradually washes out with every hair wash, which also means there is no visible build-up.

This method uses a developer that opens up the cuticle layer of the hair, allowing the color to penetrate the top layer, which makes the color more durable.

Permanent coloration

For a drastic change in hair color, you can resort to permanent color, i.e. coloring. Coloring involves opening the cuticle layer to allow the color to penetrate into the hair, where it settles permanently.

In contrast to tinting, coloring is permanent - it does not wash out but grows out over time, resulting in a visible root. The bigger the difference between the natural hair color and the newly dyed color, the clearer and more noticeable the roots become. It is therefore necessary to recolor the roots frequently.

Coloring will also cover grey hair, so it puts a strain on the hair. It is therefore important to use high-quality hair care products. So that the color looks good for as long as possible.

All about bleaching

As with tinting, you cannot lighten hair that has already been dyed with permanent hair color. If you have dyed hair and want a lighter shade, you will have to resort to bleaching.

The principle of bleaching is very simple, it pulls the color pigments out of the hair, which is why the hair is also very damaged and can even break off if used incorrectly. After bleaching, the hair should only be washed with products that are especially suitable for bleached hair.

For all those who want a lighter hair color, there is no way around bleaching. However, this process requires special attention to minimize potential damage. A professional salon visit can help to carry out bleaching in the right and gentlest way to avoid unwanted results.

Your perfect hair color

Deciding between tinting and coloring your hair depends on several factors, including the desired change and hair care preferences. Whether you prefer a tint that washes out gently or a permanent color for long-term results, each method has its benefits.

Regardless of the method you choose, it's important to understand your hair's needs and use high-quality care products to keep the color radiant and healthy for as long as possible.
